About

Malaysia is not short of news. It is short of explanation. A special project under Global Asia Consulting (globalasia.my), an organisation focused on analysing political economy and geopolitical issues.

Our story

Something big happens. A fuel subsidy changes. A fund holding millions of people’s retirement savings quietly sells off a company. The headline lands, everyone argues about it for two days, and then it vanishes. Most of us are left with the same question we started with: what does this actually mean for me?

GAMTHOR – Read the game.

We take one story at a time and stay with it until it makes sense. We dig through the paperwork, check the numbers, and write it up in language a normal person can read on a phone, on the way to work. No jargon. No wall of statistics. The whole thing explained the way a smart friend would explain it, if that friend had spent the week reading the fine print so you did not have to.

Where the name comes from

GAMTHOR is pronounced game-thor. It comes from game theory: the study of how people and institutions decide when the outcome depends on what everybody else does next.

That is a fair description politics and business. A party joins a coalition it spent a decade attacking because the arithmetic changed. Almost nothing here is a single actor making a single choice. It is several players, all watching each other, all working out their next move.

Read the news that way and patterns emerge. That is the lens we bring to every story.
